Cash for Clunkers and CARS (Car Allowance Rebate System) Update

First of all, there is no such thing as “Cash For Clunkers”.  It is well-documented at this point that any official-looking website claiming to be an authority on the “Cash For Clunkers” rebate program is potentially a scam.  The government does indeed have a program that could reward some car buyers thousands of dollars for their old gas guzzler.  But this likely won’t benefit most car buyers and not for quite some time.

President Obama has signed the program into law according to the official government website, but the program won’t be officially rolled out to dealers until late July.  What this means to the consumer is that dealers won’t be able to access the program benefits until they know how.  As it stands, the details are still being worked out regarding dealership responsibilities and participation guidelines.

Some car buyers are currently delaying their purchases for all the wrong reasons.  Customers will not be able to get the full retail trade-in value of their cars in addition to the government rebate.  Since the dealerships will be forced to destroy the trade-in vehicle, they will only be able to give it’s value as scrap material.  Customers who have an old trade-in worth six or seven thousand dollars for example, will be better off to trade the car rather than apply for the (maximum) $4500 CARS rebate along with the couple hundred dollars as scrap value.
